Indiana farmer starting to plan for 2022

A southwestern Indiana farmer says he’s already starting to prep for the 2022 growing season.

Ben Kron says fertilizer prices are one of his top concerns.  “With fertilizer prices going through the roof, it’s going to be pretty interesting,” he says.  “We’re still trying to figure out what we’re going to do on the fertilizer side of things.”

He tells Brownfield he’s hoping for enough time this fall to get some ground worked and get as much fieldwork done as he can ahead of the upcoming growing season.  “We’re definitely going to try and get some fall spraying done and help with our weed pressure,” he says.  “It was kind of wet early and we had a lot of weeds come in late, especially where the corn didn’t get to canopy as fast.  We’re seeing a few more weeds in our corn fields than normal.”

Kron says they’re a little over a quarter completed with harvest, which is on par with the rest of the state. The USDA says Indiana farmers have corn harvest about 26% complete and soybean harvest is 28% complete.
