#5 Iowa heads to Maryland riding 10-game win streak on 93.1 The Buzz

The fifth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes head to Maryland tonight riding a 10-game winning streak and winners of their last seven Big 10 contests. Coverage of the Hawks and Terps starts Friday at 5 p.m. on 93.1 The Buzz. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. on FS1.

1: The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 5 in the AP poll for the third straight week. It is their highest ranking since Nov. 29, 2015 (#4). Iowa has two wins over ranked opponents (vs. #17 Indiana, 34-6; at #9 Iowa State, 27-17) this season and has won five straight against ranked opponents overall. Only Alabama (8) has more consecutive wins over ranked opponents.

2: Iowa has won its last 10 games. The Hawkeyes have outscored their last 10 opponents, 329-127, averaging 32.9 points per game offensively and allowing 12.7 ppg during the winning streak.

3: Iowa has won seven straight Big Ten games. It is the fifth time in the last 30 years Iowa has won seven straight conference games (2020-21, 2015, 2008, 2004, 1991). Iowa won eight straight conference games in 2015 and 2008, and seven straight in 2004 and 1991.

4: Iowa has not won 11 straight since opening the 2015 season with 12 straight wins. Iowa reached the Big Ten Championship game and accepted an invitation to the 2016 Rose Bowl game.

Iowa is 8-3 all-time in games played on Friday. Iowa and Nebraska meet on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, for the 11th consecutive season.

PETRAS CONTINUES TO WIN

The Hawkeyes averaged 31.8 points per game in 2020, Petras’s first as starting quarterback. It marked Iowa’s highest point per game total since 2002 (36.5). Iowa won its fi nal six games in 2020, outscoring its opponents 214-83.

GOING THE OTHER WAY
Iowa ties for No. 10 in the country and leads the Big Ten with six interceptions. The Hawkeyes had three intercepƟ ons Week 1 against Indiana, including a pair of interceptions returned for a touchdown by DB Riley Moss. LB/SS Dane Belton also recorded his first career
interception. Iowa answered its Week 1 performance with three interceptions Week 2. Matt Hankins recorded a pair of times and Seth Benson registered his first career interception.

Iowa has turned nine turnovers into 51 points in 2021. Iowa has scored points following all nine takeaways. The Hawkeyes’ defense has scored 20 points (3 TDs and 1 safety). Iowa has 70 interceptions since 2017, the most by any team in the country. Iowa has had at least one interception return for a touchdown in each of the last 14 seasons and 19 of the last 21. The Hawkeyes ranked third in the Big Ten with 11 interceptions in 2020.

FRESH LEGS
Two true freshmen made their first career starts Week 4 against Colorado State. OL Connor Colby started at RG. WR Keagan Johnson started at wide receiver. Colby was the first true freshman offensive lineman to start since Tristan Wirfs in 2017. Johnson was the first true freshman wide receiver to start since Ihmir Smith-Marsette in 2017.

NONCONFERENCE, NO PROBLEM
Iowa has won 15 straight non-conference games, including 12 regular season nonconference victories and three bowl wins. The nonconference win streak is the longest in the country. Iowa’s last nonconference loss was at the 2017 Outback Bowl (Florida, 30-3).

Melbourne, Australia, native Tory Taylor ranks fifth in the Big Ten averaging 47.9 yards per punt. Taylor has 11 punts of 50 or more yards, including a career-long 69-yard punt at Iowa State in Week 2. Iowa’s Week 2 punting average of 51.1 ranks No. 3 all-Ɵ me in the
Ferentz era and its Week 1 punƟ ng average of 49.5 ranks No. 7 in the Ferentz era.

Taylor was Big Ten Co-Special Teams Player of the Week following Iowa’s win at Iowa State. He averaged 51.1 yards on eight punts. Five of his punts were downed inside the 20, while Iowa State had just one punt return.

In 2020, Taylor was named Eddleman-Fields Big Ten Punter of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten by the coaches, media and Associated Press. He ranked third in the Big Ten and 19th in the country averaging 44.1 yards per punt. The freshman downed 18 of his 40
punts inside the 20. Only six of Taylor’s 32 punts were returned (31 yards). Iowa ranked fifth nationally and No. 1 in the Big Ten in net punting (42.9).

Taylor is on the Ray Guy Award Preseason Watch List and is a preseason first-team All-America honoree by The Athletic. He was one of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award and was named a first-team Freshman All-American by the FWAA in 2020.

GOODSON LEADS GROUND GAME
RB Tyler Goodson leads Iowa’s rushing attack with 364 yards on 80 aƩ empts. He rushed 22 times for a career-high 153 yards and a career-high three touchdowns Week 3 against Kent State. It was the third-multi-touchdown game of his career. The 100-yard rushing game
was the sixth of his career. Against Kent State, Goodson became the fifth Iowa player (sixth instance as Akrum Wadley did it twice) in the Ferentz era to rush for 150-plus yards and 3-plus touchdowns in a game (LeShun Daniels 2015, Shonn Greene 2008, Akrum Wadley
2015, 2017, Mark Weisman 2012).

Goodson has 11 rushing touchdowns in the last 10 games. He is averaging 100.9 yards per game (5.2 per carry) during Iowa’s 10-game winning streak. His five touchdowns in 2021 Ɵ e for second in the Big Ten, and his third touchdown rush against Kent State pushed him over 100 career points scored (104).

Goodson led the Hawkeyes and ranked third in the Big Ten with 762 rushing yards in 2020. Goodson had seven rushing touchdowns, Ɵ ed for fourth in the Big Ten. He was named first-team All-Big Ten by coaches, media and Associated Press in 2020.

Goodson led Iowa in rushing attempts (143) and rushing yards (762). He tied for the team lead with seven rushing touchdowns (15, 3, 9, 7, 1, 10, 80). He has 1,764 career rushing yards (19th all-time).

In Iowa’s 23-19 win against No. 7 Minnesota in 2019, Goodson became the first true freshman to start at running back under Ferentz since 2012 (Greg Garmon). He was also the first true freshman to lead the team in single-season rushing in 2019 (638 yards).

CELEBRATING #300
The Hawkeyes’ 30-7 win against Kent State on Sept. 18 was their 300th win at Kinnick Stadium since the stadium opened in 1929. The fi rst game played at Kinnick Stadium was Oct. 5, 1929, a 46-0 Hawkeye win against Monmouth. Iowa’s 100th win at Kinnick was a
31-19 victory over Arizona on Oct. 4, 1969. The 200th win at Kinnick Stadium was a 44-19 victory against Miami, Ohio, on Sept. 8, 2001. Iowa became the seventh Big Ten school to celebrate at least 300 wins in its home stadium.
