USDA reduces wheat crop outlook

The USDA made a larger than expected cut to its 2021 U.S. wheat production estimate following downward adjustments for both winter and spring wheat. Both crops have seen significant impacts from drought conditions in portions of the U.S. Plains.

All wheat production is estimated at 1.646 billion bushels, a decline of more than 51 million from August and more than 182 million from 2020, with an average yield of 44.3 bushels per acre, down fractionally on the month and 5.4 on the year.

Winter wheat is seen at 1.277 billion bushels, a cut of more than 41 million from last month, but a jump of nearly 106 million from last year, with an average yield of 50.2 bushels per acre, compared to 51.8 in August and 50.9 in 2020.

Spring wheat came out at 331.14 million tons, a drop of about 13 million from a month ago and 256 million from a year ago, hit hard by smaller planted area and a higher rate of abandonment during harvest. The average yield for spring wheat of 32.6 bushels per acre was up slightly on the month, but well below last year’s average of 48.6 bushels per acre.
