Welcome rains to take aim at the Plains
During the next few days, some drought relief should occur. Notably, a multi-day rain event across the central and southern Plains should result in 5-day rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches or more from Texas to eastern Nebraska. Some of that precipitation will extend westward into the Four Corners States, with the greatest amounts (locally 1 to 2 inches) expected in the southern Rockies. In addition, periods of precipitation will affect the Northwest before ending on Thursday. The greatest totals, locally 2 to 4 inches or more, will affect western Washington.
Other areas—including California, the Great Basin, the northern High Plains, and much of the East—will receive little or no precipitation for the remainder of the week.
Elsewhere, chilly weather will briefly settle across the Northwest, with mid-week freezes expected in colder areas such as the Klamath Basin and the Snake River Plain.
On the Great Plains, hot weather will soon be replaced by more typical temperatures.
Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of near- or above-normal temperatures nationwide, except for cooler-than-normal conditions in southern Florida, western Texas, and southern New Mexico.
Meanwhile, near- or above-normal precipitation across the southern half of the U.S. should contrast with drier-than-normal weather in the North.
