Red meat, poultry stocks down on year
Red meat and poultry stocks in cold storage tightened from the end of July to the end of August.
The USDA says red meat in cold storage on August 31st, 2021 was 903.101 million pounds, down 6% on the year, with an 8% drop in beef to 414.935 million and a 1% decline for pork at 460.059 million pounds.
Poultry was reported at 1.137 billion pounds, 20% lower, with chicken and turkey both decreasing by 20% on the year at 708.22 million pounds and 452.61 million pounds, respectively. The turkey numbers included record monthly lows for hens, mechanically deboned, and unclassified.
The USDA’s next set of meat production and demand estimates is out October 12th.
