Educational event teaches students about soybeans, agriculture

SYNLawn, the largest manufacturer of synthetic grass in North America, recently hosted an educational event with farmers to teach students about science, sustainability, and soybeans.

Tabitha Cromer, with SYNLawn, says the goal was to help students at the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem understand more about where their food comes from.

“We have to have farming. We lean on all the products we receive naturally and so this event was extremely important to help children understand where their food come from,” she says. “I think the highlight for the children is they were able to meet the farmers firsthand. They were ecstatic and they took away a lot of information with them.”

The event was held in an outdoor area of the historic school building where SYNLawn New York recently donated and installed a soy biobased synthetic grass field.

She says it also helped students specifically learn about soybeans.

“The SYNLawn product has soybeans in it and so it is a plant-based product,” she says. “(For the event) we had the opportunity to work with the United Soybean Board and local farmers so they could share with students the science of soybeans and how it works with biodiesel and other products like SYNLawn.”

United Soybean Board Vice Chair and New York farmer Ralph Lott says it was an opportunity to tell the children what they do with soybeans.

“These young children will grow up to be adults and they’ll be purchasing products and if we can educate them now about what we do as farmers it’s a win-win for kids and farmers in the country,” he says.

He says SYNLawn has been a great partner.

For the Farmers on the Green Event, SYNLawn collaborated with the United Soybean Board, New York Corn and Soybean Growers Association, Indiana Soybean Alliance, John Bowne agricultural science program, the Flushing FFA chapter, and the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem.
