Joint initiative calls for greater competitiveness in beef supply chain

The American Antitrust Institute and Organization for Competitive Markets are working together to enhance meatpacking competitiveness.

The groups’ new initiative urges the U.S. Departments of Justice and Agriculture to support policies encouraging competition in the beef industry to benefit producers and consumers.

They say between 1980 and 2020, the retail sector’s share of the beef dollar has grown by about 65 percent, while the packer’s share increased by more than 70 percent.  At the same time, ranchers’ share of the beef dollar dropped by about 40 percent.

The organizations are calling for vigorous antitrust enforcement, pro-competitive regulation, and constructive legislation to increase competition and diversity within the beef supply chain.
