SW Minnesota farmer says faucet turned on in August

A farmer in southwest Minnesota says his summer rainfall totals quadrupled the past two weeks.

Matt Widboom tells Brownfield after an extremely hot and dry June and July, the Worthington area has picked up more than 10 inches of rain since August 5th.

“The jury (on yield) is probably still out on two things, what kind of impact did that June heat really have on knee-high (or below) corn? And, how much positive impact is the August rain going to have on plants that were already so far ahead of normal that it isn’t going to be able to take advantage of it.”

He says soybeans will benefit from recent rains depending on planting date, physiological maturity, and day length.
