30% of Illinois corn considered mature first week in September

The Illinois corn crop is maturing as farmers strategize when to start harvest.

The USDA reports as of Sunday, 30% of Illinois corn is mature, a few percentage points ahead of this time last year, with 96% in the dough stage and 83% dented. Illinois corn is rated 67% good to excellent a bit less than both the previous week and year.

Illinois soybeans turning color reached 22% with 9% dropping leaves, both within a couple points of the five-year average. USDA rates the crop 65% good to excellent also down a bit from the previous week and the first week of September 2020.
