Nebraska farmers celebrating late-season rains
A Nebraska agronomist says farmers in his state have welcome the recent late-season rains.
Channel’s Tyler Vreugdenhil says the precipitation, combined with the accumulation of growing degree units (GDUs) has been good news for farmers. “The corn crop is finishing really nicely and fast,” Vreugdenhil says. “In some areas, the rain we got as of late was too late for a lot of the dryland fields but is significantly impacted the test weight and seed size particularly in soybeans.”
He tells Brownfield harvest looks promising. “Irrigated fields are going to be everything we hoped to be and I think the drylands will absolutely take advantage of the late moisture we have gotten,” he says.
Vreugdenhil says it’s always fun to watch the yield monitor at harvest — but there are some other things growers should be watching. “What are we seeing in terms of weed escapes late because that’s where our problem areas for that next growing crop next year,” he says. “What can we do in terms of management style or what might we need to do next year? Just think about the pests that affected this crop it could over winter.”
He says harvest is rapidly approaching.
