Pastures under pressure from fall armyworms

A west-central Tennessee farmer says pest pressure has put their hay crop under additional stress this year.

Johnny Dodson tells Brownfield they’ve had to spray their Bermudagrass because of the fall armyworm pressure.  “Our last hay cutting was a little less than we would typically have,” he says.

He says it also forced them to reduce their hay cuttings.  “The armyworms have absolutely cleaned it like you would sweep a floor,” he says.  “Our Bermudagrass pastures are brown.”

Dodson says they haven’t had the same challenges in their fescue pastures, but those have been under more stress from the hot temperatures.
