Pandemic assistance program widens eligibility

USDA is making changes to the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 2 for some livestock, poultry, and specialty crop producers.

FSA Administrator Zach Ducheneaux says the changes are based on feedback and concerns officials received to provide greater flexibility and address gaps within the program.

Contract producers of eligible livestock and poultry can now apply for additional revenue losses experienced during 2020 based on 2018 data instead of 2019 like in the original program.  USDA has also widened the base of eligible livestock farmers who can receive payments and opened the program to contract producers who began their business in 2020.

Updates to sales-based commodities, which are generally specialty crops, also allow for revenues to be based on 2018 history and USDA added grass seed as an edible commodity.

Producers have until October 12th to apply or modify their applications.
