Congressman Thompson on 2023 Farm Bill: Listening, Learning and Leading
Ranking member of the House Ag Committee Glenn “GT” Thompson is spending the August congressional recess connecting with farmers about priorities for the 2023 Farm Bill.
Thompson has several Midwest locations in his travel plans including a recent policy discussion at the Illinois State Fair alongside fellow committee members Representatives Rodney Davis and Mary Miller.
“This to me is about listening, learning, and leading. I am really looking forward to hearing from farmers and commodity groups about what is working, what farm bill programs are effective, what is not working, what are problems, what is not being addressed and what emerging issues are out there.”
He tells Brownfield the top priorities he has gathered so far.
“There is a lot. The common themes are rural broadband, workforce, the need for more processors, specifically protein processors. I am also hearing that people are very concerned about threats to raise the capital gains tax. Then, the icing on the cake is the fact that they are talking about restoring the 2015 Obama Waters of the US or WOTUS.”
Thompson wants input from a diverse group of farmers to best improve these issues.
