Clock is running out to overturn pork processing line speed reductions
The pork industry is on borrowed time to lobby for a reversal of a federal court ruling to slow line speeds at six pork processing plants across the country.
The Biden administration has until the end of August to appeal the ruling, however earlier this summer Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack said the USDA will not seek to overturn the court ruling.
Executive Director with the Nebraska Pork Producers Association Al Juhnke tells Brownfield the reduction will add pressure to prices. “That’s the message were’ trying to get, again, with USDA and the federal government and others that we have to do something about getting those line speeds, which are safe by the way,” Juhnke says. “We’ve been working on these for 20 years and they work quite well in the plants that did this pilot project that we need to allow them to go back and do what works.”
Juhnke says the line speed reduction affects the intake of animals and not on processing.
