USDA projecting smaller oat crop

2021 U.S. oat production will be well below 2020 following a decline in planted area. Weather will also be a factor in some key growing areas, with drought impacting production in parts of the Plains and Midwest.

This year’s oat crop is projected at 41.431 million bushels, compared to 65.355 million a year ago, with an average yield of 57.4 bushels per acre, up fractionally from July but down 7.7 on the year.

The USDA left new crop oat ending stocks unchanged on the month at 25 million bushels, with a cut in imports canceled out by a lower feed use estimate. Old crop stocks were also unchanged at 38 million bushels. The average farm price is estimated at $3.60 per bushel, steady with a month ago and well above the estimated average of $2.77 for the previous marketing year.

The new marketing year for oats started June 1st.
