Ag Secretary Vilsack in Minnesota to see drought impact, tour rural healthcare facility

The head of USDA is in Minnesota this week touring drought conditions in the southeast part of the state.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack met with Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, as well as Congresswoman Angie Craig, at a farm near Cannon Falls Thursday.

Speaking to Brownfield last week during Farmfest, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he’s been communicating with the federal government about drought assistance.

“To help us on some of this CRP land, give us a little bit of leeway. But I think for the state, we’ve been talking about some of the rules around fencing, watering, maybe some additional assistance on transportation costs because we’ve got folks looking 500 miles (for hay).”

Vilsack also visited River’s Edge Hospital in St. Peter Thursday afternoon for a tour and announcement about rural healthcare funding.
