Strong demand for US beef and pork continues

June was another big month for US meat exports and the head of the US Meat Export Federation says that’s good news for beef producers.

President and CEO Dan Halstrom says the strong June follows the momentum from April and May.  “The exciting thing, and this is both beef and pork, is that the growth is broad-based,” he says.  “It’s not one country that stands out.  A year ago it was pork in China that everyone was talking about, but this year, we’re talking Japan, Korea, Mexico.  We’re talking about Central America and South America.”

And, he tells Brownfield, those months could have improved significantly had the west coast ports not been struggling. “It’s lack of containers, it’s lack of chassis to move the containers, it’s lack of labor to drive the trucks to move the containers,” he says.  “And then throw on top of that the global situation with the supply chain of the containers is a bit out of whack at the moment.  There’s more demand coming from Asia from the West back to the East.”
