Important pork and beef fundraisers return to Wisconsin State Fair

The return of the Wisconsin State Fair means some farmer groups can again raise money to promote their causes.

Keri Retallick

Keri Retallick with the Wisconsin Pork Association tells Brownfield the fair is their main fundraiser to support advocacy efforts for pork producers.  Retallick says fighting California’s Proposition 12 is one of the issues they use resources for. “California has gotten to the point where they have real difficulties getting bacon and other pork products because of all of the rules and regulations that are part of Proposition 12.”

Retallick says it’s important for producers to have representation on state and national issues.

Vickie Dunnum is the manager for the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association steak trailer. “It’s so wonderful to be back to see the people and just see the youth that we have working for us. Just the smell of the good smells in the air is great.”

And, her husband Craig Dunnum says the steak trailer is the main fundraiser for the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association with five stops every summer. “Including the State Fair which is about 90% of our funding that supports all of the cattlemen’s efforts, legislative efforts as well as membership efforts throughout the state, and of course, we’re hooked up with the NCBA and many local county cattlemen’s organizations as well.”

Both The Wisconsin Pork Association and the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association are next to the Wisconsin Products Pavilion at State Fair through August 15th.
