Nebraska farmer says crops are suffering from lack of rain

A Central Nebraska farmer says the drought is taking a toll on his dryland crops.

Clay Govier of Broken Bow says crops in his area look good unless they’re not irrigated. “A lot of the area has been kind of fortunate in July to catch some rains,  but we were definitely at a deficit in June. Now, it’s just been really hot and dry here recently,” he says. “The non-irrigated crops are sure suffering.”

The corn, soybean and specialty crops grower says rain has only provided temporary relief from irrigating. “We’ve been chasing pivots really hard this summer,” Govier says. “I’d say it definitely started earlier than we were used to.  June was so dry and so hot, we definitely had to get things cranked up.”

Govier says even with the drought, he expects to start harvest on time.
