Farmer reports yellow soybeans after excess rain

Central Indiana farmer Mike Beard says his crop conditions have declined slightly because of excess rain.

“In my neck of the woods, we’ve been blessed with water here lately and my soybeans are definitely showing me visually where my drainage needs to go this fall,” he says. “Wet feet in soybeans don’t work very well and they have turned a shade of yellow. For the most part, corn is doing pretty well. We’re looking forward to a little later harvest but a good harvest for corn. Soybeans look like they’ll be average because of this extra rainwater.”

He tells Brownfield his operation’s scheduled tile drainage project couldn’t be coming at a better time.

“We’ll start putting in 100 miles of tile, something like that,” he says. “It’s a big job but we sorely need it in my part of Indiana.”

Beard grows corn and soybeans in Clinton County and says an unexpected result of the pandemic is increased cost for tiles because of ongoing resin shortages.
