Minnesota farmer excited about value-added soy oil opportunities

The chair of the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council is excited about a couple of emerging value-added opportunities for soybeans.

Joe Serbus, who farms in Renville County, says there’s a soy oil-based product called RePlay Agricultural Road Treatment that extends the life of asphalt.

“And along with that, we’ve linked up with Goodyear. They are adding soy oil to tire production, and we have tires on the market right now that have soy oil in it.”

Goodyear has committed to phasing out all petroleum from its products by 2040, using soybean oil in its place.

The RePlay road treatment is produced by BioSpan.  The company says asphalt oxidizes and erodes over time, and their soybean oil-based, polymer enhanced product can add years to the surface by reversing the oxidation process.
