Widely scattered rains lead to varied crop conditions
Wisconsin’s Farmers Union president says the crops in southwestern Wisconsin reflect the hit-and-miss rains so far this growing season. Darin Von Ruden farms near Westby in Vernon County, where he says crops look good. “We’ve got a lot of corn that’s over our heads already. Most corn is well over waist-high. Soybeans are looking good. A lot of farmers are half done, or even some that are all the way done with second-crop hay too, already.
But Von Ruden says he does not have to travel far to see farms that are struggling from the lack of rain. “We’re fairly good, but you get 15-20 miles south of us and it gets dry down in Iowa, Grant, southern Crawford county. They’re quite dry down there.”
Von Ruden tells Brownfield he is fortunate to have enough rain this year so far. “Over the past two years, we’ve been drier than some other areas so it’s good to be looking at having an abundant supply of feed for our animals going into the winter.”
