Canadian energy company claims Keystone XL pipeline shutdown violated NAFTA
A Canadian energy company is seeking to recover $15 billion in economic loss from the US revoking the presidential permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline project, which they say breached free trade obligations.
Calgary based TC Energy has filed a notice of intent with the US Department of State to begin a legacy North American Free Trade Agreement claim under the US Mexico Canada Agreement stating the order was a violation of US responsibilities under NAFTA.
After years of controversy over the project, a permit granted by President Trump in 2017 was revoked by President Biden his first day in office this year saying the project did not meet goals to mitigate the climate change crisis. TC Energy officially ended the project last month, eliminating thousands of related jobs.
