Dairy product production mostly higher

Nonfat dry milk and skim milk powder production showed a major inverse in USDA’s dairy product report for May.

Total cheese production totaled more than 1.16 billion pounds, up five percent on the year and nearly two percent from the prior month. Italian cheese production was down fractionally on the year and month while American cheese was up more than seven percent on year and fractionally for the month.

Butter production totaled 185 million pounds, up nearly eight percent from the prior year and almost one percent from last month.

Nonfat dry milk was up more than 30 percent from 2020 and skim milk powder was down 37 percent. Dry whey production was down almost eight percent while lactose was up four percent from the previous year.
