Nebraska coalition reunites to engage in WOTUS rule rewrite

A coalition of Nebraska organizations is once again fighting back against rewriting the Waters of the U.S. rule.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Mark McHargue tells Brownfield any change to the current Navigable Waters Protection rule threatens private property rights for ag producers. “We have ditches full of water and fields full of water.  Under the previous rule, the Obama-rea rule, those would be considered navigable and would be subject to federal regulation.  That’s very impactful,” he says.

Common Sense Nebraska, which consists of more than 20 statewide organizations, was created in 2014 to help the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers establish rules for water regulation.

McHargue tells Brownfield their focus is to ensure a balance of power at the state and local levels by engaging with EPA and Army Corps. “Because it’s a coalition, a very broad coalition – I think coalitions speak with a louder voice.  We will begin to message, I’m sure we’ll will have public meetings and events and make sure the administration knows that we’re watching.”
