Farmers Union leaders pleased with Biden’s infrastructure priorities

Farmers Union leaders were pleased overall with President Biden’s comments about infrastructure improvements during a recent visit to Wisconsin.

National Vice President Patty Edelburg is from Amherst, Wisconsin. She told Brownfield, “The fact that we’re going to be able to get people on both sides of the isle talking about repairing our roads, repairing our bridges, you know, our rail, our rural broadband finally getting something done. It’s been way too long since we’ve had a bill like this that’s going to actually do some good for our countryside.”

State Farmers Union President Darin Von Ruden tells Brownfield he was pleased both parties could reach a compromise. “Republicans and Democrats that were on the committee that worked together to come up with the final bill got a bill together that the President can sign, and then we can get the country working on those.”

Von Ruden likes treating broadband expansion to rural areas in much the same way rural electrification was handled in the 1930s and 1940s, and the pandemic highlighted the need to get this done. “This bill is going to put a lot of money into that, so hopefully we can reach those last-mile areas that have been probably the biggest issue across not only the state of Wisconsin but across the nation.”

Biden spoke about the infrastructure compromise during a stop in La Crosse, Wisconsin Tuesday.
