Agronomic insights heading into July

Agronomists for Beck’s Hybrids are presenting research supporting best management practices at their annual Herbicide Insight Days.

Becks Agronomist Jon Skinner tells Brownfield one of the main topics focuses on research to maximize weed control in different soybean varieties.

“In the Midwest there are a lot of variances in crops, both corn and soybeans. I would definitely keep in mind using an in-season residual to suppress weeds that could emerge later in the season.”

He says Illinois farmers minimized replant this year, but for those farmers across the Midwest who did have to replant, he says the worst thing a grower can do is give up on the crop.

“Although those crops may be a little behind schedule, we have found in our research that utilizing fungicides on both corn and soybeans can still be profitable. Using different micronutrient blends can still be profitable.”

Research plots featuring cover crops, volunteer corn and weed control in wheat are also along the route for the event.

Brownfield interviewed Skinner at Beck’s Effingham, Illinois location Wednesday.
