Nebraska farmer looks ahead after hail, spotty showers last week

East Central Nebraska farmer Rick Gruber says he’s confident his crops will rebound after a period of drought-like conditions and severe weather. “We still have a pretty decent shot at a crop, not as much where it hailed.”

The York County corn and soybean grower tells Brownfield, “Where I live, I’ve had the least amount of rain.  Overnight you’ll get .10 and it’s like well I know it rained more than that somewhere and then you drive and talk with someone else and they say yea we had an inch or an inch-ten. It’s been pretty spotty but we’ve been really thankful to have temperatures back off a bit.”

He says while his soybeans suffered hail damage from two storms last Thursday, his top concern is weed control. “We kind of don’t want to get that started.  There’s enough weed pressure and we have enough resistance with herbicides the way it is and that’s a liability after having hail roll through.”

Gruber says his corn crop didn’t suffer much damage, but he’s trying to decide if he should replant soybeans.
