First cutting of alfalfa makes big jump in Iowa

Dry and warm conditions allowed Iowa crop farmers to spray herbicides, side-dress nitrogen, bale cover crops, and harvest hay.

The USDA’s latest weekly crop update says as of Sunday, corn emergence is at 96 percent with 77 percent rated good to excellent.

Nearly all of the state’s intended soybean acres are planted, and emergence is a week and-a-half ahead of the five-year average.

Soybean condition rated 73 percent good to excellent.

The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 58 percent, with 62 percent in the good to excellent category.
