Palmer amaranth found in northwest Minnesota county for second time

Palmer amaranth has been found in a field in northwest Minnesota.

The noxious weed was discovered after the Minnesota Department of Agriculture inspected a field being used for the disposal of agricultural screenings in Polk County.

The field was scouted, and MDA staff found several dead Palmer amaranth plants on the field’s edge remaining from last year, suggesting the plants had grown and matured.

The landowner is working with the department to eradicate any remaining weeds and it’s believed the issue is isolated to only one field.

It’s the second time Palmer has been confirmed in Polk County.

Polk is one of 10 counties in Minnesota that have confirmed cases of Palmer amaranth since the weed was first discovered in the state in 2016.
