Global demand remains key to US beef and pork exports

The head of the US Meat Export Federation says strong demand for US pork and beef will be vital to livestock producers profitability this year.

Dan Halstrom told attendees of USMEF’s Virtual Spring Conference the biggest win for beef exports in the last six months has been China.  “With an increase of 15-times a year ago for Quarter 1,” he says.  “We’re still forecasting a record for China this year in 2021 with over 125,000 metric tonnes expected to be exported.”

He says South Korea remains a top market for US beef and pork.  “They have a booming e-commerce traffic, booming online platform development, they were the leader before COVID-19 and during 2020 there was an exponential boost to demand to these two segments,” he says.  “The Korean markets are reporting 84% growth in this segment, in Korea, last year.”

The conference runs through Thursday.
