Farmer says early-planted crops are looking good

Western Indiana farmer Kevin Cox says his early-planted crops look better than expected despite variable weather conditions.

“Our corn looks good and the early soybeans we planted look fantastic,” he says.

He tells Brownfield he started planting the first week of April and two weeks later his farm received two inches of snow.

“I was scared to death that I was going to have to redo all of it and it’s the best-looking stuff I have right now,” he says. “There are a few spots where we have frost damage but the advantage to early planting is far outweighed any issues we’ve had.”

He says that’s the earliest he’s ever started planting and it appears to be a success so far.

“Last year was almost a picture-perfect year for us and this year has certainly had a set of challenges we’ve had to deal with,” he says. “Every year you plan and hope for the best and you figure out how to wade through it as it comes.”

Cox farms in Clay and Parke counties.
