Wisconsin crops emerging, hay quality improving

Wisconsin’s farmers made a lot of field progress with dry soils, above-normal temperatures, and limited rain.  USDA reporters say just over four-and-a-half days were suitable for fieldwork through Sunday as isolated rains fell throughout the state.

Hay and pasture conditions all improved with 69% of hay in good to excellent condition, up four points, and pastures up seven points to 65% good to excellent condition.  Many farmers were harvesting first crop hay last week, especially in the southern part of the state.

Ninety percent of Wisconsin’s corn is now planted, and 83% of the soybeans are planted with 38% of the beans already emerged.  Ninety-six percent of the oats are planted, and 97% of the state’s potatoes are in the ground.  Many potato fields in central Wisconsin had a couple of inches of new growth over the weekend.
