‘Hope revived’ in Nebraska Sandhills with weekend rain
Mother Nature has brought some relief to the drought-stricken Nebraska Sandhills.
“We are actually very positive. Hope’s been revived a little bit. We did receive three-quarters-of-an inch of rain.” Shauna Meyring who ranches northeast of Alliance.
She tells Brownfield before an additional inch of rain last week, they hadn’t received measurable amounts of moisture since the winter. “We were not very hopeful earlier and we were holding off on taking cows to grass and just really hoping and praying for moisture and rain. It looks like we are going to have a good start now.”
As temperatures have warmed up, she says the grass has grown enough for them to take their cow-calf pairs to pasture. “Which again is about two weeks behind from what we typically do with turning those pairs out to grass. We’ve been feeding those and holding out for a couple of weeks and we feel quite a bit more confident now going out to grass. Whether that holds, we’ll have to wait and see.”
She says cooler-than-average temperatures have hindered grass growth but that’s changing as normal temperatures are forecast this week.
