USDA releases climate strategy

The USDA has released a 90-day progress report on Climate Smart Agriculture and Forestry practices (CSAF) with tracking and giving farmers credit for those practices high on the list of priorities.

USDA says it will develop and enhance methods and tools for quantifying the Greenhouse Gas benefits of promising practices and ensure that they are consistent and scientifically sound. They say the methods and tools will accurately capture real GHG reductions.

The report does not mention a carbon bank or using the department’s Commodity Credit Corporation spending authority to make payments to farmers for carbon capture.

The blueprint says USDA will leverage its existing programs to support climate-smart practices and develop a strategy that works for all farmers, ranchers, forest landowners, and communities as directed by President Biden’s executive order.
