Nebraska farmer says Mother Nature didn’t hold back the rain when it started
A South-Central Nebraska farmer says he needed rain and when he got it, Mother Nature didn’t hold back.
Blake Dunaway who grows corn and soybeans near Orleans tells Brownfield the moisture started after he finished planting. “We’re really wet right now. We’ve caught just under three inches of rain in the last week,” he says. “We had some running water and washouts on some of our hillier ground.”
He says he’s not concerned about replanting from rain but is carefully watching other emergence issues. “We had a little bit of wind during planting so some of our no-till covered back up the row with trash,” he says. “So, we’re fighting that a little bit and getting the crops up through the trashy spots but other than that we’re seeing good stands out of everything.”
Dunaway says he might have to start pivots to break a soil crust on ground where crops haven’t emerged if those fields don’t get some rain.
