Illinois dairy expected to double with construction of carousel parlor
Planting isn’t the only progress being made on a grain and dairy farm in southwest Illinois.
Fifth generation farmer Nick Harre says while planting is progressing well, he is excited about the construction of a new free stall barn and 44 cow rotary milking parlor on their family farm in Nashville, IL.
“Building a new milking parlor is about a once in a lifetime thing. My dad was in his teens whenever they built our current milking parlor. This is just the next step.”
They currently milk 350-400 head of Holsteins and the project will almost double capacity, modernize technology for the longevity of their operation and lessen their dependence on human labor.
“It is difficult to find people who want to work on dairy farms, and that is part of the reason for the expansion project- thinking of how we can expand but yet not need to find any more human labor.”
The rotary parlor should be in use by the end of the year.
