Wisconsin considering Great Lakes harbor improvements for exports
Wisconsin’s Transportation Secretary says there are more agricultural shipments using the Great Lakes. Craig Thompson says, “Just in 2020 alone, grain shipping on the Great Lakes increased by almost 30%.”
Thompson told the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection Board the state is bonding an additional 15-million dollars for the Harbor Assistance Program, and he’s hoping to see additional infrastructure to aid Great Lakes shipping very soon. “With the amount more grains that are going out that way, I believe we are getting close. We’ve been facilitating conversations about getting an intermodal facility, and I’m hoping even more than one intermodal facility in Wisconsin, and I think that could have a tremendous benefit to the agriculture community.”
Secretary Thompson says he restored the harbor assistance position within the transportation department, knowing the importance of the state’s harbors and how unique Wisconsin’s Harbor Assistance Program is.
