Internet of Things bill clears Commerce Committee

Legislation that its authors say would advance precision agriculture technology has cleared another hurdle.

The bill from U.S. Senators Deb Fischer of Nebraska and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota would encourage the National Science Foundation to support Internet of Things research including advanced sensing systems for rural and agricultural areas and a technology assessment of precision ag tools 18 months after passage.

The bill would also update language in associate degree programs for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs allowing distance learning.

The legislation has passed the Senate Commerce Committee and is awaiting action in the Senate Agriculture Committee.
