USDA: winter wheat crop up 10% on year

The USDA estimates 2021 winter wheat production at 1.283 billion bushels, up 10% from 2020.

The yield is seen at 52.1 bushels per acre, up 1.2 on the year, with 1.588 million acre increase in harvested area to 24.612 million .

Hard and soft red winter production are both expected to be above a year ago, at 730.883 million and 331.594 million bushels, respectively, but the USDA sees a smaller crop for white winter wheat at a combined 220.498 million bushels. In 2020, hard red winter production was 658.64 million bushels, soft red winter was 266.235 million, and white winter totaled 246.147 million bushels.

The total wheat production estimate for this year is 1.872 billion bushels with a yield of 50 bushels per acre and harvested area of 37.4 million acres.

As of Sunday, 49% of U.S. winter wheat is in good to excellent condition and while spring wheat planting and development are ahead of their respective averages, there are a lot of concerns about drought impacting production in the northern and northwestern U.S. Plains.

The USDA’s next set of supply, demand, and production numbers is out June 10th.
