Minnesota farmer hopes another smooth spring leads to repeat bumper crop

A farmer in west-central Minnesota who had a bumper crop in 2020 says this spring resembles a year ago.

D.J. VanKlompenburg of Montevideo tells Brownfield the planting seasons have been similar.

“We were completely done and had the planter parked the first week of May of last year, and it was one of the best harvests we’ve had. So if we can get the rest of these soybeans in in a quick manner, and assuming we have a normal growing season, I think there’s some good crop potential here.”

He’s done with corn planting and nearing the halfway point for soybeans, but says they could use some rain.

“Putting soybeans in the ground, there’s quite a few of them that are going into some dry soil. We’re going to need some rain here in a short bit to help this crop along and get it through emergence.”

VanKlompenburg says they picked up just enough rain Wednesday that mud was sticking to his boots this morning, but he does plan to resume planting later today.
