Interest areas for 30×30 initiative released

The Biden administration has released a new report outlining six interest areas for the President’s 30×30 conservation plan which aims to conserve 30 percent of America’s land and water by 2030.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says included in the ‘America the Beautiful’ initiative is rewarding voluntary conservation efforts by farmers, ranchers and forest owners.

“Federal government will do that by looking for ways we can bolster locally led conservation,” he said. “From USDA’s standpoint, we can use the inherent flexibility of our Farm Bill conservation programs to work with producers, landowners, conservation groups and states to conserve farmland, ranchland and forest land.”

He said recent expansions of the Conservation Stewardship and Conservation Reserve programs are to boost landowner participation in conservation practices.

Vilsack said the administration has also requested additional funding through Congress to support the project. Vilsack made his comments on a media call Thursday.
