Bill limiting inspection authority of ag facilities passes

A bill supported by the Missouri Cattlemen’s and Missouri Pork Associations that would restrict the inspection authority of ag facilities has passed in the Missouri legislature.

Representative Kent Haden of Mexico, Missouri, is the sponsor of the bill that would limit the power to inspect ag facilities in the state to the USDA, Missouri Department of Agriculture, county sheriffs and state and federal agencies with statutory authority. Those limits would be in place unless the farmer asks for others to inspect their operation.

While a state district veterinarian, Haden has told Brownfield that three attempts were made by unauthorized people to inspect livestock. He says that can be a health risk for animals.
