New York State bill could ban neonic-treated seeds

A bill under consideration in the New York legislature could ban the use and sale of neonicotinoid-treated seeds in the state.

The Birds and Bees Protection Act would classify them as pesticides and ban their use unless there are no non-treated seeds available or if the New York Department of Ag and the markets determine it’s too costly.

The recently amended bill would allow the use of neonicotinoids to control invasive species “in certain cases” as determined by the New York agriculture department.

The legislation would also require ag and environmental agencies to conduct a consultation with Cornell University to identify “feasible alternatives” to the use of neonic pesticides.
