Wisconsin farmer ahead of schedule with corn planting
Wisconsin farmers have been aggressively planting for the past week.
Brownfield spoke with Steve Duwe of Johnson Creek while he was planting corn Monday afternoon. he says, “I’m out planting corn, and it’s just starting to sprinkle.”
Duwe says several of his neighbors have been planting soybeans, but he and his son have been focused on getting the corn in since early last week. “I don’t have any beans planted. I’ve got 625 acres of corn planted out of my 800. This is the earliest I’ve ever had this much corn planted. Normally, we’re more into May with our heavy grounds and stuff, but being dry this year, we’re able to move right along.”
Dewe is in his thirteenth year of strip-tilling using the same machine he started with. He tells Brownfield it saves his soil, saves fuel, and he has never taken a yield hit. Since it’s still dry, Duwe says he wouldn’t mind delaying the end of his planting with a good rain.
