Appeals court ruling on chlorpyrifos

A federal appeals court has ruled the EPA has to prove the ag chemical chlorpyrifos is safe in the next 60 days or ban its use.

The court says EPA has had 14 years to respond to a petition calling for its ban and in that time has “exposed a generation of American children to unsafe levels” of the insecticide.

The EPA has told DTN it is reviewing the ruling and considering its options.

Chlorpyrifos is used on aphids and other biting and sucking pests but its use has dwindled in the last few decades. It’s used in corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton and orchard crops.

Corteva is discontinuing their product, Lorsban, because of low demand.
