Missouri River Basin drier now than past few years

Management of Missouri River Basin is beginning to shift away from flooding and releasing stored water supplies.

But John Remus, Chief of the Army Corps of Engineers’ Missouri River Basin Water Management Division, says the focus is changing.

“The basin is much drier than it has been in the recent past. As of now, the reservoir system is in very good shape from both a flood control and flow support point of view.”

And while the reservoir levels are in good shape, he says, “If the dry conditions persist or worsen we may be implementing water conservation measures yet this year.”

Remus says he doesn’t want to alarm anyone but users should review their contingency plans in case run-off in the upper basin requires water conservation measures.
