Mississippi River dredging projected to bring $461 million annual value to US soy

Key infrastructure investments are being highlighted during the 2021 Commodity Classic, including the five-foot dredging of the lower Mississippi River that began in July.

Missouri Farmer Meagan Kaiser says she is excited for the opportunities that project will bring for farmers, especially soybean growers.

“This is projected to be almost $461 million in annual realized value to US soy. It will provide for an extra 500,000 bushels to be loaded onto these ocean liners taking our crop to the world marketplace.”

As Treasurer of the United Soybean Board, Kaiser says this is an example of how checkoffs form partnerships with other ag organizations and groups like the Army Corps of Engineers to increase profitability for farmers.

“We hope that this serves as a template of a way we can be more powerful in making sure that our infrastructure is there for generations to come.”

She says infrastructure improvements take a lot of time to implement, but they are vital to keep up with US export demand.
