Grain and Feed Association of Illinois shares grain bin safety reminders

The Executive Vice President of the Grain and Feed Association of Illinois shares some reminders during National Grain Bin Safety Week.

Jeff Adkisson tells Brownfield the number one rule is to never go in a grain bin with the equipment running and to lock it out so no one else can come along and turn it on.

“Many times, that is how accidents have happened, somebody goes in when the grain is plugged up and all of a sudden the grain starts flowing then somebody becomes trapped and ultimately engulfed. Those are very preventable accidents, and we don’t want to see those happening.”

He says when going in a bin, make sure there is a second person with you to observe, so if something happens, they can go and get help.

“We don’t need anybody getting in harm’s way. We want to make sure everybody gets home to their family each night.”

National Grain Bin Safety Week runs through Saturday, but Adkisson says it is important to keep safety top of mind year-round.
