Opportunities and challenges for US ag on the global market

The former chief ag negotiator for the US Trade Representative says there are some great opportunities for US agriculture on the global market.

Gregg Doud, chief economist for Aimpoint Research, a global, strategic intelligence firm, says he looks to several Asian countries. “Whether it’s the Philippines, Vietnam, or Indonesia, it has great potential for US agriculture,” he says.  “You’re going to see continued growth in Japan, continued growth in South Korea, and a great relationship with Taiwan.”

But, he tells Brownfield there are some parts of the world where US agricultural goods face some headwind. “The challenges are going to be with Europe,” he says.  “Their farm to fork initiative is going to something that’s going to drive us crazy here in the United States going forward.”

Doud says there’s huge potential in India. “But you never really get past the word potential and having the ability to decrease the barriers to access that we have to India,” he says.  “Everybody thinks that’s a great opportunity, we’ve spent so much time on it, but we’ve really struggled to make progress.”

Doud says he’s optimistic the new administration will work to keep US agriculture competitive on the global market with current and new trading partners.
